In Quebec City where the Quebec Trade Summit was being held, the demonstrators, while protesting against free trade outside the conference hall, knew next to nothing about basic principles of economics and about international trade, but demanded a seat in the trade negotiation. This provided a very good lesson for the European Union: to prevent demonstrations of the kind, they should adopt a free trade policy and open its own domestic markets. By so doing, other countries will also open their doors. At the same time, the dispute settlement process of the WTO should be reformed. When free trade booms, every nation in the world will then benefit, and the anti-free trade noise will naturally die down. Besides, free market economies and free trade are the most effective way to learn knowledge, to realize our potential, to create wealth, to satisfy our wants and needs, and to improve our life.
The passage can be divided into five parts, the first ten paragraphs being the first part, paragraph 11 to paragraph 13 being the second part, paragraph 14 to paragraph 18 the third part, paragraph 19 to paragraph 23 the fourth part, and the last three paragraphs the fifth part.
The first part is the general impression of the trip to the Quebec Trade Summit, especially the impression of the protesters outside the conference center, who did not know what is happening in the economic development, as though they were Japanese soldiers isolated on a Pacific island at the end of WWII.
The second part tells the reader that people should reflect on free trade and globalization, and on the approach to the promotion of free trade and globalization.
The third part tells the reader what used to be done to pursue free trade and economic globalization, that is, by the adoption of the policy of diversion and appeasement.
The fourth part tells the reader what should be done to realize free trade and economic globalization -- by explaining to the public the benefits of free trade, by removing the trade barriers and opening the domestic market first, and by reforming the dispute settlement process of the WTO.
In the fifth part the author mentions that the protesters care about many things other than the truth – there is no palatable alternative to free economies and free trade, and then gives them a piece of advice: free market economy and free competition is the only way to lift the poor out of poverty.
