An IBM computer con5isted of specialized components that could not be used in any competing product. The design, production, delivery and after-sales support of components, as well as the assembly of the final product, all took place in premises owned and managed by IBM. Other market leaders in the computer industry, such as DEC and Unisys, had similar structures.
